Who Holds onto a Mortgage?
Updated 14 days ago (March 6, 2026)
A mortgage holder is an individual or entity that currently owns a mortgage loan. As such, the holder of a mortgage is not necessarily the original mortgage lender, since these lenders usually sell mortgage loans to investors. By selling loans to investors, mortgage lenders can access a new source of funds to offer additional mortgage loans.
