What Are the Requirements of an FHA Loan?
Updated 1 month ago (March 6, 2026)
FHA loans have minimum down payment and minimum credit score requirements. Generally speaking, you must have a credit score of at least 580 to qualify for an FHA loan, though it can be possible to obtain an FHA loan with a lower score. With a lower score, you will need to make a higher down payment. With a credit score of at least 580, you should also be able to qualify for an FHA loan with a down payment of at least 3.5% of the mortgage.
FHA loans might impose additional requirements, including a certain amount of capital on hand, an upfront fee, and mortgage insurance, which includes its own monthly fee.
