What Is a Homeowners Association (HOA)?
Updated 10 days ago (March 6, 2026)
A Homeowners Association (HOA) is an organization responsible for the upkeep of common areas and amenities, shared structures and shared exteriors, and sometimes for managing and enforcing community covenants. About one in five U.S. homes belong to an HOA. The HOA might only be responsible for handling landscaping and cleaning public areas, or it could enact covenants regarding acceptable use of your home or even the specific color of paint for your property. If your rental unit is part of an HOA, or if you are considering purchasing property that is part of an HOA, there are certain areas that will require your attention.
