What Are Examples of Reasonable Accommodations?

For reference purposes, the following cases are usually considered to be reasonable accommodations when requested by a tenant with disabilities:

  • Lowering standards for an applicant’s employment history due to long-term hospitalization

  • Assisting in the rental application process

  • Allowing for the use of an alternative building entrance to limit interactions with other tenants

  • Permission to use a service animal

  • Permission to send a rental payment through the mail or another generally accepted remote payment system

  • Construction of wheelchair access ramps and sufficiently large parking space for wheelchair users

  • Use of special door handles and lower countertops
