Can You Refuse Rent to an Applicant Who Does Not Speak English?
Updated 6 days ago (March 6, 2026)
No. Under new guidance by the Federal Housing Association, denying housing to individuals who speak other languages is discrimination based on national origin.
Also, the same situation applies to tenants who are native speakers of another language and have a non-American accent.
Tellus TIP:
Never try to advertise your property exclusively asking for English-speaking tenants.
